Trees and Traffic: Restorative Environments and Children's Executive Functioning

چکیده
Kaplan’s Attention Restoration Theory (1995) suggests that exposure to nature, even in the form of pictures, helps to restore depleted attention. Previous studies have found that adults’ executive functions (attention, inhibitory control, and working memory) often improve after viewing nature scenes, but not after viewing urban scenes. The current study assessed whether pictures of nature also facilitate the recovery of young children’s (M = 66.10 months) executive functions. Results indicated that there was no effect of viewing nature or urban pictures on young children’s executive functions, suggesting that children may respond differently than adults to restorative environments. Learned associations between nature and relaxation may explain this difference. RESTORATIVE ENVIRONMENTS AND EXECUTIVE FUNCTION 4

متن کاملRituals Improve Children's Ability to Delay Gratification.
To be accepted into social groups, individuals must internalize and reproduce appropriate group conventions, such as rituals. The copying of such rigid and socially stipulated behavioral sequences places heavy demands on executive function. Given previous research showing that challenging executive functioning improves it, it was hypothesized that engagement in ritualistic behaviors improves ch...
متن کاملOrange Is the New Green: Exploring the Restorative Capacity of Seasonal Foliage in Schoolyard Trees
Urban schoolyard environments are increasingly characterized by a proliferation of hard surfaces with little if any greenery. Schoolyard "greening" initiatives are becoming increasingly popular; however, schoolyard designs often fail to realize their restorative potential. In this quasi-experimental study, a proposed schoolyard greening project was used to visualize alternative planting designs...

Using data from a diverse sample of 620 families residing in rural, predominately low-income communities, this study examined longitudinal links between fathers' sensitive parenting in infancy and toddlerhood and children's early executive functioning, as well as the contribution of maternal sensitive parenting. After accounting for the quality of concurrent and prior parental care, children's ...
متن کاملLess-structured time in children's daily lives predicts self-directed executive functioning
Executive functions (EFs) in childhood predict important life outcomes. Thus, there is great interest in attempts to improve EFs early in life. Many interventions are led by trained adults, including structured training activities in the lab, and less-structured activities implemented in schools. Such programs have yielded gains in children's externally-driven executive functioning, where they ...
